Transfer Rumors: Newcastle want to sign the best Premier League midfielder available
As Newcastle fans ponder the transfer rumblings surrounding their best midfielder, Bruno Guimarães, the club is reportedly after a top midfielder on the transfer market.
Kalvin Phillips has been a hot topic around St. James’ Park, as th
anchester City defensive midfielder is seldom used by Pep Guardiola and expendable as a loan transfer.
However, Newcastle are now being linked to an even better midfield option, as the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards reports the club is interested in signing Everton star Amadou Onana.
The 22-year-old Belgian midfielder is the best Premier League midfielder available on the transfer market in 2024.
It’s unclear if he would be an option in January given his importance to the Toffees and the fact that they are not 100 percent safe from relegation. However, Onana is definitely worth waiting for if he is more of a summer option.
Amadou Onana’s profile fits Newcastle well
Onana won’t be cheap. He is one of the best young midfielders in European football. With 2.6 tackles and 1.8 fouls drawn per game, Onana has a robust box-to-box profile and the kind of engine Eddie Howe loves in midfield.
Newcastle need a young, athletic box-to-box midfielder to add to the mix who can solidify the defense, make good decisions on the ball, and get things moving forward for the front line.
The Magpies are currently out of the European football picture after qualifying for the Champions League in 2022/23, so a big winter move would indeed be ideal.
Yet with FFP sanctions hovering, causing Bruno G. to be linked elsewhere, the feasibility of Onana remains in question. However, it is wise for Newcastle to pursue him strongly as an option. He can transform the squad with his profile.
If the Magpies are going to go after anyone anyway, then they might as well show interest in the best option within their own league. With Arsenal and others interested, Newcastle’s recruitment team will be up against it.
