Entering training camp, Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens said that last season’s veteran Blake Griffin was considering his options. Griffin, who turns 34 in March, has a long injury history and was contemplating retirement.

Recently, during a Boston practice, Stevens talked to the media about the possibilities and likelihood of making another acquisition by the NBA’s trade deadline on February 8. He mentioned how another big wing would not hurt, with that piece potentially already being on the depth chart, hence the limited impactful play from Oshae Brissett and others.

Entering the six-time All-Star’s lone Celtics’ season last year, Griffin mentioned how he and Stevens have had respect for each other and kept in contact over the years. Griffin has also had close ties with multiple Celtics’ players.

In 41 games with Boston, the Celtics went 27-14 with Griffin in the rotation and 10-6 with him in the starting lineup. The five-time All-NBA figure averaged 4.1 points and 3.8 rebounds, shooting 48.5 percent from the field and 34.8 from three.

With this championship-eager Celtics’ roster, Griffin once again adds stability within the front court while bolstering Boston’s interior for any remaining questions. His presence provides tremendous mentorship while adding another fitting option for the second unit, likely the deepest team in the NBA.

With one open roster spot and limited options to fill it, a reunion with Griffin could prove the Celtics’ most beneficial move.
