Larry Bird Fan Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison Asks for Extra 3 Years to Match Celtics Legend’s Number 33

In a remarkable show of fandom, a convicted criminal in Indiana has requested an additional three years be added to his prison sentence to honor his basketball hero, Larry Bird. The unnamed inmate, originally sentenced to 30 years, petitioned the court to increase his sentence to 33 years, aligning with the iconic number 33 jersey worn by the Boston Celtics legend.

The convict, a devoted Larry Bird fan since childhood, expressed his deep admiration for the NBA star, stating, “Larry Bird’s number 33 represents excellence and dedication. I want my time served to reflect my respect for one of the greatest basketball players of all time.”

Despite the unusual nature of the request, the presiding judge agreed to the extension. “This is an unprecedented request,” noted Judge Smith. “However, given the personal significance and the voluntary nature of the inmate’s petition, the court has decided to grant the additional three years.”

Larry Bird, renowned for his remarkable career with the Celtics, is considered one of the greatest basketball players in history. His number 33 jersey was retired by the Celtics in 1993, symbolizing his lasting legacy in the sport.

The inmate’s gesture has garnered mixed reactions. Some see it as a testament to the profound influence sports figures can have on individuals, while others view it as an odd and unnecessary act. Regardless, the convict will now serve a 33-year sentence, paying tribute to his basketball idol.
