Tony Stewart Hints at Future Return to NASCAR, Says ‘It’s Still Home to Me

Tony Stewart considers his debut in the NHRA's Top Fuel class a success despite an early exit | AP News

In an exciting revelation that has thrilled fans and sparked fresh speculation about his future in stock car racing, NASCAR legend Tony Stewart has hinted at the possibility of returning to the sport he loves. During a media interaction at Eldora Speedway, the iconic racer-turned-team owner spoke about his deep connection to NASCAR and expressed his desire to contribute to its growth once again, either as a team owner or in another significant role.

Stewart, who retired from full-time NASCAR competition in 2016 after an illustrious career, has since been heavily involved in motorsports through various ventures, including co-owning Stewart-Haas Racing and running Eldora Speedway. Despite expanding his interests to sprint car racing and NHRA drag racing, Stewart made it clear that NASCAR continues to hold a special place in his heart.

    “NASCAR will always be home”

“I’ve spent the majority of my life in NASCAR, and no matter where I go or what I do, it will always be home for me,” Stewart said. “There’s something about the competitive spirit, the energy of race day, and the incredible fan base that keeps me tied to it. One day, I’d love to come back in a bigger way, whether as an owner or just someone who can help move the sport forward.”

These comments come as a pleasant surprise for NASCAR enthusiasts who have long hoped for Stewart to take on a larger leadership role in the series. While he remains a co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing, one of the most competitive teams in the NASCAR Cup Series, his recent ventures outside of NASCAR had left many wondering if he had moved on from stock car racing altogether. Stewart’s remarks now suggest that he envisions a future where he could once again be more hands-on in the sport.

    A Multifaceted Career Beyond NASCAR

Since stepping away from NASCAR as a driver, Stewart has kept busy with a wide array of racing-related projects. His ownership of Eldora Speedway has made it a premier destination for dirt racing events, including the famed Eldora Million. Additionally, Stewart has been deeply involved in NHRA drag racing, where his wife, Leah Pruett, competes as a professional driver. Stewart himself has taken up competitive drag racing, further showcasing his passion for motorsport in all its forms.

Despite his foray into other racing disciplines, Stewart acknowledged that NASCAR holds a unique position in his life. “There’s nothing quite like NASCAR. It’s where I grew up as a driver, learned the most about competition, and built relationships that last a lifetime. It’s where I want to leave a lasting legacy.”

Return as an Owner or Mentor?

While Stewart did not provide a specific timeline for his potential return, he did outline possible roles he could play in the future. One of the more likely options would be a greater focus on team ownership. Stewart-Haas Racing, which he co-owns with businessman Gene Haas, has been one of the most successful teams in NASCAR over the past decade. However, Stewart’s personal involvement in the day-to-day operations has waned as he focused on other projects.

A more active role in managing the team or expanding his influence in NASCAR leadership could be on the horizon. Stewart also mentioned the possibility of mentoring young drivers, something he has done informally over the years. “Helping the next generation of drivers has always been something I enjoy. If I can pass on what I’ve learned to help them succeed, then I’ve done my job,” he said.

A Legacy Cemented, But Still Growing

Tony Stewart’s legacy in NASCAR is already secure. With 49 Cup Series wins, three championships, and a reputation as one of the toughest competitors on the track, he is considered one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport. Beyond his success as a driver, Stewart’s impact as a team owner has also been significant, with Stewart-Haas Racing winning multiple races and a championship under his leadership.

Despite these accomplishments, Stewart’s recent comments suggest that he believes his work in NASCAR isn’t finished. “I’ve always said that if you love something, you never truly leave it behind. NASCAR shaped who I am, and I want to be part of its future,” he said.

What’s Next for Stewart and NASCAR?

While it’s unclear exactly when or how Tony Stewart will return to NASCAR in a larger capacity, his remarks have certainly reignited excitement among fans and those within the sport. Whether as a more active team owner, a mentor to young talent, or even in a broader leadership role, Stewart’s potential return would undoubtedly be a major asset to NASCAR.

For now, Stewart remains focused on his current ventures but left the door wide open for a future reunion with the sport he loves. As he wrapped up his remarks, Stewart reiterated his commitment to racing and hinted that big things could be on the horizon.

“I don’t know when, I don’t know how, but I know one thing: I’ll always be connected to NASCAR. And when the time is right, I’ll be back.
