Minnesota Vikings Defensive End Jonathan Greenard Opens Up About His Drive to Improve Following Last Season’s Performance, Emphasizing Personal Growth and Higher Expectations for the Vikings Defense in 2025, While Veteran Safety Harrison Smith Reaffirms His Unwavering Commitment to the Team and Leadership Role Amid a Critical Transition Year for the Franchise’s Defensive Identity

As the Minnesota Vikings gear up for the 2025 NFL season, optimism and accountability are emerging as the hallmarks of their defensive locker room. Newly acquired defensive end Jonathan Greenard, who signed with the team in free agency, spoke candidly this week about his expectations for himself and the Vikings defense, while veteran safety Harrison Smith echoed similar sentiments about loyalty, leadership, and maintaining a winning culture during what many are calling a pivotal season.

Greenard, who tallied eight sacks last season with the Houston Texans, says he’s nowhere near satisfied. “I look at everything I did last year and ask, ‘How can I be better?’” Greenard said following a workout at the team’s training facility. “Coming to Minnesota, I knew I had an opportunity not just to play at a high level, but to help elevate a group that’s hungry to be elite. I’ve taken that personally.”

The 27-year-old pass rusher says the Vikings’ defensive scheme, under new coordinator Brian Flores, is “aggressive and smart,” allowing players like him to thrive in attacking roles. Greenard also emphasized the importance of communication and chemistry, two aspects he’s focused on building with his new teammates. “If we want to be a top-five defense, it starts with us buying in, every day, from the vets to the rookies.”

One of those respected veterans is Harrison Smith, now entering his 13th season with the Vikings. Despite speculation about retirement or trade, Smith made it clear he’s all-in with Minnesota. “I’ve always taken pride in wearing this jersey,” Smith said. “There were options, but my heart’s here. I want to win here. I want to teach these younger guys what it means to be a Viking.”

Smith, who’s been the anchor of the secondary for over a decade, praised Greenard’s mentality and work ethic, noting that it’s the kind of energy that can change the culture of a defense. “We’ve got talent. We’ve got depth. Now it’s about sharpening it and making it work every Sunday.”

With Greenard’s motivation and Smith’s steady leadership, the Vikings defense appears set to take the next step. Whether they rise to an elite level remains to be seen, but the attitude inside the locker room is already shifting — and that might be the most important step of all.
