Former Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy announced his engagement Friday to long-time girlfriend Katya Kuropas with a heartfelt post on Instagram, days after declaring for the 2024 NFL Draft. McCarthy, a former four-star signee in the 2021 cycle, saved his best season for his junior campaign after producing 22 touchdown passes and only four interceptions, and received positive reports from the NFL’s college advisory committee as a potential first-round pick in April.

With a 27-1 record as a starter, McCarthy’s legacy with the Wolverines is cemented as one of the best players in program history. Prior to winning the national championship this month, Harbaugh called McCarthy the “greatest quarterback in Michigan football history” and said he’s looking forward to seeing if he can match former Wolverines great Tom Brady’s success at the next level.

McCarthy saved one of his best performances for when it mattered most, completing 17-of-27 passes for 221 yards and and three touchdowns — including the game-tying score in the final minutes of the fourth quarter — in Michigan’s Rose Bowl playoff semifinal victory over Alabama.
