The head of the Steelers suggests that they might trade for a quarterback.
During the most of the 2023–24 season, the quarterback position was a source of inconsistent play for the Pittsburgh Steelers. And as a result, longstanding owner Art Rooney believes they may make a significant move at the position this summer.
During his Tuesday appearance on KDKA News (CBS Pittsburgh), Rooney was questioned about his possible decision to switch this summer to the quarterback position, should the price be right.
He said that the team will not be “closing the door” on any possibilities in response.
“We’re not closing the door on anything as we sit here in the first week of February,” Rooney declared. “We need to go through a lot of evaluations. We’ll consider every alternative and take the necessary action to improve in the upcoming season.
Kenny Pickett, a second-year quarterback for the Steelers, started the season as the starter. However, a string of injuries coupled with patchy performance forced veteran backup Mason Rudolph to assume the starting role close to the conclusion of the year.
After Pickett was well enough to play again, controversy developed, but he did not wind up starting for the Steelers against the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card game.
Given that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin stated last month that there will be competition for the starting position this next offseason, this statement from Rooney isn’t exactly shocking.
Nevertheless, given how early in Pickett’s NFL career he is, hearing this from Rooney is really intriguing. One could argue that he ought to have at least another season as the team’s starter to establish his worth.
However, it’s evident that the Steelers are a squad that could be a quarterback away from becoming a serious AFC contender.
The Steelers may be interested in a number of quarterbacks this offseason, including Kirk Cousins and Justin Fields. Additionally, it appears like the Pittsburgh front management will at the very least consider the possibility of acquiring an available quarterback option to contend for the starting job.
