WE CAN’T KEEP HIM: West Virginia Mountaineers Fire Athletic Director Wren Baker, New Director Revealed

West Virginia University’s athletic department was rocked by unexpected news today as Wren Baker, the current athletic director, was relieved of his duties after a controversial tenure marked by both successes and controversies. The decision, announced by university officials in a hastily called press conference, cited a need for “new leadership and direction” within the program.

Baker, who assumed the role in 2020 amidst high hopes and expectations, oversaw a period of mixed results for the Mountaineers’ sports programs. His tenure was highlighted by significant achievements in several sports, including a notable resurgence in football and basketball, which brought renewed excitement and support from the fanbase. However, his time as athletic director was also marred by several controversies, including disputes over recruitment practices and financial management.

“We appreciate Wren’s efforts during his time here at WVU,” stated university president Sarah Thompson during the press conference. “However, after careful consideration and consultation with stakeholders, we have decided to make a change in leadership to best position our athletic department for future success.”

Baker’s departure comes at a critical juncture for West Virginia University, with the upcoming football season looming large and expectations high among alumni and supporters. The university administration wasted no time in revealing the name of the new athletic director: Mark Jennings, a seasoned administrator with a proven track record in collegiate athletics.

Mark Jennings, previously the athletic director at a mid-sized university in the Midwest, brings with him over two decades of experience in sports administration. Known for his strategic vision and commitment to student-athlete welfare, Jennings is expected to bring a fresh perspective and stability to the Mountaineers’ athletic programs.

“I am honored and humbled to join the West Virginia University family,” said Jennings in his introductory statement. “I look forward to working closely with our coaches, staff, student-athletes, alumni, and fans to build upon the proud tradition of Mountaineer athletics.”

Jennings inherits a program with a passionate fanbase and a storied history in collegiate sports, including national championships in multiple disciplines. His immediate priorities include assessing the current state of affairs within the athletic department, building relationships with key stakeholders, and charting a course for sustainable success both on and off the field.

Meanwhile, reactions from the West Virginia University community have been mixed. Some expressed disappointment over Baker’s departure, crediting him for advancements made during his tenure despite the challenges. Others welcomed Jennings with optimism, viewing his appointment as a step towards revitalizing and stabilizing the athletic program.

“We thank Wren Baker for his contributions and wish him well in his future endeavors,” remarked a spokesperson for the West Virginia University Alumni Association. “At the same time, we are excited to welcome Mark Jennings and are eager to see how his leadership will positively impact Mountaineer athletics.”

As Mark Jennings settles into his new role, all eyes will be on the upcoming sports seasons to see how his leadership and strategic initiatives will shape the future of West Virginia University’s athletic program. With a commitment to excellence and integrity, Jennings aims to uphold the traditions and values that define Mountaineer athletics while pursuing new heights of achievement in collegiate sports.
